Jerry and David's Amateur Hour

The Yahoo! directory began as a labor of love by its founders, Jerry Yang and David Filo. Here they select a site created out of the same passion.

Electric Olive Gallery
(http://www.electricolive.com/index.html)

Graphic designer Ken Fair's Electric Olive Gallery is a treat for the weary surfer searching for signs of talent online. This virtual gallery is full of gorgeous artwork: original sketches; futuristic, digital graphics--all of which employ the latest in neat-0 graphics software. Although all the works were done by a single artist, his style is so eclectic it includes something for everyone, whether it's 3-D, Warhol-esque, or an impressionistic sketch of a pitcher by a window. The common thread seems to be the use of olives as a recurring theme, and the only drawback is that after surfing you crave martinis. Don't miss the Mars Direct exhibit (no there aren't any olives on Mars)."

Mars Direct Art Page - Robert Zubrin's call for manned missions to Mars as soon as possible has not only stirred technical interest in the Red Planet, but artistic interest as well. This Web site by artist Ken Fair has a collection of artwork showing Mars and the exploration of it by humans. There is also background information about Mars Direct and the genesis of this site, and a call to action.

THE CASE FOR MARS ARTISTS

The Space Age was conceived in dreams and born on the launch pad when engineering finally caught up to imagination. Artist Ken Fair figures the creative community can drive the Space Age beyond Earth orbit onto the surface of Mars by undertaking a collaborative effort to stimulate public support for exploration of the Red Planet. His open letter to artists makes the case for Mars and features a set of links to arts organizations focusing on science and technology. Fair's own Mars Direct gallery displays his vision of a new home for the next generation.

Ken Fair's colorful and lush computer-tooled prints are posted in his Electric Olive Gallery. Displaying a talent for diverse imagery, Fair's pieces explore the surreal and abstract as well as the quotidian; one series entitled Planet Builders features road signs placed in interstellar space. Links lead to other artists, poets, and ne'er-do-wells.

"There's a lot of art out there, but this is really good. We can't easily categorize Ken Fair's rendered images. There are landscapes to abstracts, most in strict, slick, rendered-image style, but here and there there's grayscale and images built to resemble watercolor or chalk. Nice touches include artist's notes and the quickly loading thumbnail versions."

"...Multitalented artist Ken Fair creates fantastic digital works (mostly from "scratch") using a variety of drawing, painting, and 3-D programs. The results are unique, often surreal images of both familiar places and imaginary landscapes. This is a must see site for digital art connoisseurs."
"Ken Fair's digital artwork is diverse: colorful 2001-esque spaceships, surreal landscapes, strange still-lifes, and -- a running theme of olives. A handful of rooms house his works, which the visitor may view and/or purchase. The site's speed (very quick) is a commendable feature, as is the background design: funky, yet simple."

"The electric olive gallery site contains stunning computer generated artwork..."

Jed Bowtell, The Age

"Ken Fair's digital creations are free for the browsing at this attractive one-man gallery..."
"...If you ever need to prove to someone the superiority of the Mac platform, then be sure and point them to this site!"
